Farmhouse at Salerno

The guests having their accommodation in apartments or rooms in our farm stay, can easily get to the city centre by car or by train. Driving to Salerno, our guests can reach in less than half an hour Piazza della Concordia, and park their car there. The train station in Salerno can be reached in 10-15 min by the station in Battipaglia, and even from the small station of Montecorvino Rovella, located at walking distance from our farmhouse.

Salerno (Salernum in latin) was funded by Romans close to the previous Etruscan city named Irna, located in the eastern part of the modern city. Salerno saw its greatest splendour in the middle age, when in year 774 the Lombard duke Arechis II transferred the seat of the Duchy of Benevento to Salerno. After year 1000 Salerno underwent similar dominations as Naples, including Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragoneses, Spanish, Bourbons and French. Salerno has seen a major renaissance of tourism in last decades and, in spite of being outside the Campania World Heritage Sites.

The most famous monument in Salerno is certainly the Duomo (Saint Matthew Cathedral) with its crypt. The Duomo host the tomb of the apostle Matthew (Matteo, in Italian), whose relics where transferred there, according to the tradition, in the middle of the X century. A visit to Salerno should certainly include a walk in the vibrant historic centre around the Cathedral and on the seaside promenade “lungomare Trieste”. High above the city, the beautiful Arechis castle from the VIII century will allow you to enjoy a magnificent view on the whole Salerno gulf.
